HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL HANDBALL FEDERATIONS.

In 1926, the Congress of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was appointed by the IOC to draft international regulations for handball. In 1928 which coincided with the holding of the Olympic Games, representatives from 11 countries held a meeting in Amsterdam. From the results of the meeting, an official Handball Federation organization was formed which was called the International Amateur Handball Federation (I.A.H.F) consisting of 11 countries.

The first President of the I.A.H.F was Avery Brundage, a member who later became president of the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C). One of the first assignments of I.A.H.F in Amsterdam in 1928 was to hold a demonstration match at the Olympic Games. In 1931, only three years after I.A.H.F was formed, Handball was included in the Olympic Games by I.O.C. In 1934 members of I.A.H.F increased to 25 member countries.

World War II caused many problems because many countries were involved in the war. Many nations in the world do not have the opportunity to exercise because of situations and conditions that are not possible. By itself the game of Handball and other sporting events suffered a setback but after the world war ended, representatives from member countries of I.A.H.F held a meeting again.

Next in 1946 an International Congress was held in Copenhagen as a milestone in the establishment of an international handball federation. The purpose of the congress itself is to regain the game of Handball. The result of this congress was the dissolution of I.A.H.F and the birth of the International Handball Federation (I.H.F) as an official organization for Handball worldwide. Members of IHF up to 2016 were 204 members.

IHF membership is divided into each confederation on 5 continents. Confederation of handball on the continental or continental level are as follows:

§  Pan-American Team Handball Federation (PATHF)
§  Asian Handball Federation (AHF)
